Married at 18!? : I hate that question...

Thursday, August 21, 2014

I get that cringe from people way too often when I state the fact that I was married at the age of 18 and my husband 20. I just want to clarify right now (just incase you aren't good with math) I wasn't pregnant with my daughter when we got married. Yes, we got married in Vegas and no, we did NOT elope. There was no secret behind it. It was very simple, we were madly in love with each other then and are madly in love with each other now. People felt free to share their opinion and their opinion affected us just about as much as our decision affected their had no effect at all.

We recently passed our 2 year wedding anniversary and I am even more in love than I was on our wedding date. Since then we have moved 3,000 miles away from our families, I gave birth to our first born, we have a fully furnished place, we bought a car (and a motorcycle) and we've experienced a whole new lifestyle here in Florida. That’s A LOT!

So much has changed from that first date where we sat and ate ice cream and laughed without a care in the world. We still share many many laughs with each other;( I'm not here to put our relationship on a pedestal even though it is pretty frickin awesome), but we also have our share of struggles every once in a while; which isn't a bad thing, we're emotionally connected. Learning to open up and share your honest emotions with somebody is scary especially when you’ve never been good at it before. We've had our ups and downs but what truly matters is our ability to power through our struggles and come out of them stronger than before. Everyday people change, whether it’s small changes; like their favorite color or big changes, but if you don’t bother to stay connected you're going to eventually grow apart. Being married is a wondrous journey and part of that journey is learning how to stay together.

People ask me all the time if I regret getting married so young and I jokingly answer “My god, Yes! It is horrible” but my true answer is No. No I don't for one second wish I was living any other way, in fact I can't even bare that thought anymore, I am exactly where I am meant to be. If anything we are lucky, lucky that we found each other so early on in our lives. I am happy and more in love than I ever have been before.

Okay, I am sounding a bit sappy now so I guess I will just end by asking you guys a few questions; what are your thoughts on marriage and age? Do you believe in love at first sight? How long have you and your significant other been together?

  2. I moved halfway across the country to be with my boyfriend when I was 18. Nobody thought we'd last, that I'd get pregnant ASAP, etc. 4 years later we're still happy with each other (not married yet) & I'm about to complete my 2nd college degree. I can't stand the stigma associated with young love! I feel so grateful to have someone by my side to share all the experiences of adulthood with. And it makes me feel extremely accomplished to be living on my own at such a young age! From the sounds of it, you're doing extremely well, and for all the people that doubt you just remember "the best revenge is success" - clearly you are successful!
So glad you discussed this- hopefully others will open their eyes about :)
